Army Motorised Adventure (AMA)
Overview
AMA provides the opportunity for those interested in motorised adventure, be it on four or two wheels, to conduct a wide range of challenges in the UK and abroad. From Navigation to training weekends, Rally Raid to global expeditions, there is something for all abilities. In addition to delivering events, AMA also has experts and an extensive library to support your future adventures.
Background
Dating back to the exploits of the Long Range Desert Group during the North African campaign of World War II, the Army has recognised the training value of vehicle mounted expeditions in support of operational effectiveness. In the 20th Century many overland expeditions were conducted using this means of transport. In 1971 the British Trans-Americas Expedition, led by explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell, traversed the Americas from Anchorage to Tierra del Fuego, including a crossing the Darien Gap. In 1975 the Joint Services West East Sahara Expedition, led by Squadron Leader Tom Sheppard, traversed the Sahara from Port Sudan to Dakar.
AMA Today
Since the present formation of AMA in 2017, expeditions have been delivered in a dozen countries around the World, including the 2017 Trans-Americas expedition, retracing the tyre marks of the 1971 expedition but on motorcycles. In 2024, two expeditions incorporating motorcycles and four-wheel drive vehicles, crossed the mountains and deserts of Morocco and Namibia. In 2025 and 2026, teams have traversed the UK TET, and expeditions to Morocco and Nepal are currently in the pipeline.
AMA is incredibly lucky to have the support of Royal Enfield; our official partner since 2025. Alongside training and engagement support, Royal Enfield has provided four Himalayans, which can be used for training and navigation events, as well as for UK and international expeditions.
